The Girls Make Games Virtual Summer Camps Registration Is Open

Girls Make Games was created by Laila Shabir and Ish Syed, founders of LearnDistrict, and launched in 2014 after wanting more push for representation, social responsibility, and opportunity for women and young girls. With creating a Summer Fellowship, getting workshops happening around the globe, and running Change the Game Design Challenge, GMG has been busy running series of summer camps, game jams, workshops inspiring the next generation of video game industry professionals. Currently, GMG has registration open for their 3-week virtual summer camp happening this July.

Girls Make Games wants their virtual summer camp to become a place of personal growth and learning. The camp will be conducted in small groups of 5-6 camp go-ers, led by a mentor (a camp counselor) virtually! Camp participants will work on community building like playing online games, and participating in community contests; a perfect way to make new friends. The camp will also have speaker sessions from industry experts, where campers can learn about careers and the pathways that lead right into them. Each camp participant gets to make their very own game to be entered to Demo Day, for a chance to present their game to a panel of judges who work in the industry, and win prizes!

Now, what might a Demo Day look like? At the end of the summer camp, GMG hosts a National Demo Day where the top creators pitch to a panel of industry experts. Winners receive amazing prizes sponsored by GMG’s partners like PlayStation and Nintendo of America! Last year, camp participants had their games judged by an incredible panel made up of Cindy Gordon and Robyn Corr of Nintendo of America, Katie Stone Perez from Xbox, Joanna Wang from Sucker Punch, and more! Want to take a look at what games won last year? They’re playable now on the Girls Make Games Itch page.
